Native American Heritage Month

National Native American Heritage Month celebrates the diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of the indigenous peoples of America and acknowledges the contributions of Native people. Check out a few titles by indigenous authors and reflect on current and historical challenges that American Indians have faced. Be sure to take advantage of local events happening around the valley.

S.T.E.A.M. Days

Science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics. The Phoenix College STEAM Committee is hosting an in-person and resources fair happening on November 9, on the main campus from 9 am - 3 pm. Unable to attend in person, join the virtual sessions happening on November 10, 11 am - 2 pm and evening sessions happening 5 pm - 7 pm. Event is free, check out the STEAM Days '22 info and RSVP to receive event details.

International Education Week

The United States Department of Education and Department of State celebrates International Education Week happening November 14 - 18, 2022. Join Phoenix College, along with other MCCCD campuses, for local and viral events happening throughout the International Education Week for the parade of flags, international food sampling, music and dance performances, fashion show, and language lessons. Don't forget to attend the international film screening of Flee for a chance to enter a gift card drawing happening November 16.

International Games Week is now International Games Month, an annual event to reconnect around the educational, recreational, and social value of all types of games. Games can be checked out for library use, or visit the Phoenix College Student Comic, Games, and Images (CGI) club, Esports club and be sure to play some virtual game at the Game Board Arena.

LGBTQ+ History Month

Celebrate the achievements of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people throughout history that have contributed to the queer community and American society highlighting the importance of civil rights movement. October was selected as National Coming Out Day is observed on October 11. Visit the library for Drag Story Hour featuring Sassy C. Diazz and Freddie Prince Charming happening 10/18/2022, reserve your seat today.

National Fossil Day - October 12, 2022

An annual celebration, held on the Wednesday of Earth Science Week, to highlight the scientific and educational value of paleontology and the importance of preserving fossils for future generations. National Preparedness Month

Pandemics, natural disasters, cybersecurity and violent attacks are part of our daily lives. Are you prepared for when emergencies hit. September is National Preparedness Month raising awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Make a plan, build a kit(s), stay alert and visit Ready.gov for more information on how to prepare, plan and make your home safe and leave a lasting legacy for others.. September is National Piano Month to pay tribute to pianists, piano makers, and listening to others play the keys. Listen to the music, watch pianists through film, or read about their musical adventures and accomplishments.

Hispanic Heritage Month

September 15 - October 15 is National Hispanic American Heritage Month, a celebration to recognize the achievements and contributions of Hispanic Americans and culture. The National Council of Hispanic Employment Program Managers (NCHEPM) announced the 2022 Hispanic Heritage Month Observance Theme is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation” encouraging us to ensure that all voices are welcomed and heard to build stronger communities. Be sure to check out local events, such as “Saul Flores: The Walk of Immigrants” presented by Student Life and Leadership.

Banned Books Week 2022

Banned Books Week (September 18 - 24, 2022) is an annual event celebrating the rebellious freedom to read those books that have been current & historical attempts to censor in libraries and schools. The American Library Association theme this year is "Books Unite Us. Censorship Divides Us." Stories should never be silenced, bust these books out of the false imprisonment and expand your mind. Don't forget to take a self with the hashtag #BannedBooksWeek, #bannedbooks, and/or #bannedbookslist at "Busted for Reading Banned Books Station."

Disability Pride Month

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities, was signed into law on July 26, 1990 by President George H.W. Bush. This legislation increases access and opportunities to those individuals with disabilities across the nation in their communities, employment, and life. This month is for those with disabilities, and the community, to celebrate who they are and reclaim visibility in public space because people with disabilities have been historically pushed out. Here are some inspirational stories and facts, or see through another's eyes with these fictional tales.

May 5 is National Missing & Murdered Indigenous Women & Girls awareness day in the United States. National Library Week - April 3 - 9, 2022

The American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publisher’s formed the National Book Committee in 1954 with goals encouraging people to read for leisure, income, health and developing a strong and happy family life. In 1957, the committee developed a plan based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use the libraries. The first National Library Week was observed in 1958, themed “Wake Up and Read!” The National Library Week theme this year is “Connect With Your Library;” April 3-9, 2022 with Phoenix College Fannin Library. Take part in the Love Your Library Scavenger Hunt with your mobile device for a chance to win a $25 Starbucks gift card. Black History Month

An annual celebration to honor the contributions made to our society by Black Americans in the United States. Carter G. Woodson established Negro History week in 1926, the second week of February.  In 1976, the United States recognized the month of February as African-American History Month, also commonly known as Black History Month. This year, the Association for the Study of African American Life & History has themed 2022 as Black Health & Wellness. Join the virtual and in-person events hosted by Student Life & Leadership all month long.

2022 Lunar New Year

Celebrated in China & other Asian countries, the Lunar New Year begins with the first new moon of the lunar calendar. As the lunar cycles vary year to year, according to Western calendars the festivities can begin anywhere from January 21 to February 20. For 2022, the Lunar New Year is February 1, however, preparations begin soon before that. Cleaning, cooking, and preparing for the year of the tiger (Animal Zodiac Sign). Enjoy these titles and check out Student Life & Leadership’s Lunar New Year celebration in Sophomore Square for food, activities and more happing February 1 from 11 am – 1 pm.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day - January 17th, 2022

The third Monday of January, our nation celebrates and honors the life and legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.; a day closest to his birth on January 15, 1929. A Baptist minister who advocated nonviolent means to create change, and one of the most influential African American Civil Rights leaders within the United States to end racial segregation in the 1960s. His actions and leadership were instrumental in the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1965. He was assassinated on April 4, 1968. In 1983, legislation was passed making the third Monday in January a federal holiday with the first observance nationwide in 1986. Read his written work and the history of his pursuits & triumphs.
