The 2025 Black History Month theme, African Americans and Labor, focuses on the central role of work in Black history and culture. It explores the diverse forms of labor—free and unfree, skilled and unskilled, vocational and voluntary—and their profound intersections with the Black experience. From the agricultural labor of enslaved Africans that sustained colonies, to debates among Black educators about vocational training, to self-help strategies, entrepreneurship, and organized labor’s fight for justice, Black people’s work has been transformational across the U.S., Africa, and the Diaspora. This theme honors and celebrates these impactful contributions. From asalh.org
