  • Sign In icon Sign in to place a hold on items for pickup.

Understanding Call Numbers

Books and media are organized using the Library of Congress Classification System, which makes it easy to browse by subject.

  • Call numbers are printed on the spine of each book.
  • They are read left to right or top to bottom.
  • Books on similar topics are grouped together for convenient browsing.

Subject Headings in OneSearch

What are Subject Headings?

  • Subject headings are a set of terms or phrases that classify library materials.
  • They are helpful in that they can lead you to relevant materials the library has on a given subject.
  • Most library catalogs and databases use subject headings.

Finding Subject Headings in One Search:

  • Search for an item in the One Search.
  • Click on the title to be taken to the full record of the item.

Subject Headings Related to Fashion Design

Below are some useful major subject headings for conducting a broad search in a subject area. Click the link to search the subject in the PC Library catalog. (Opens in a new tab.)

For a more targeted search, try adding subject subheadings.

  • Some common options are: history, social aspects, pictorial works, environmental aspects, technique, and more.
  • Note the formatting in the examples below. Use a double hyphen ( -- ) between your search terms in you want to try to mix and match from the examples.
    • Ex: Fashion design -- history -- 20th century.
