How to Integrating Library Resources into Canvas

There are several tools installed in Canvas through LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability). LTI allows you to easily integrate content from PC Library databases into your Canvas courses, saving students the extra step of authenticating when off campus.  This content is “no cost” to your students.  Content can be embedded anywhere you use the Rich Content Editor, including:

  • Modules
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Quizzes

Embedding Video

Video can be embedded using Films On Demand and Academic Video Online (AVON).  Both resources contain outstanding educational programs, including those from the History Channel, Biography Channel, BBC, and PBS.

  1. While editing a content item (such as a page, assignment, discussion, or quiz), select either Films On Demand or Alexander Street (AVON) from the more external tools menu.
  2. Search for video by keyword(s).
  3. Embed video.

Embedding or Linking to Articles

Articles can be linked or embedded using Academic OneFile, Gale Virtual Reference Library, and Opposing Viewpoints in Context.  The content in these databases can supplement course readings at no cost to your students.

  1. While editing a content item (such as a page, assignment, discussion, or quiz), select a specific database from the More External Tools menu.
  2. Search by keyword(s).
  3. Embed Document or Link to Document.   Using “embed” allows your students to view the content directly in your course.  Using “link” provides your students with a linked title to the content.
