Gathering Background Information

Gathering background information can help out in a number of ways:

  • If you are unfamiliar with the topic, it provides a good overview of the subject matter.
  • It helps you locate definitions of scientific terms that might be new to you.
  • It can help you refine your topic.
  • It can lead you to references that you can use to find the original sources of the information.

Specialized dictionaries and encyclopedias are great sources for background information! Here are two sample titles:

Using One Search

Books and ebooks can be found using One Search, the library's discovery tool. Books available for checkout are located on the second floor of the library. Try searching for your topic in the search box.

Search for Books

You can search with any words or phrases from the biological sciences, such as:

  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Biodiversity
  • Cell Biology
  • Histology
  • Microbiology

Using eBook Databases

While One Search searches eBook databases, choosing to search a specific eBook database will give you different filtering options that can help you narrow your search. You will also have less unrelated information to sort through.
