Deepfakes is the nickname given to computer-created artificial videos or other digital material in which images are combined to create new footage that depicts events that never actually happened. The term originates from the online message board Reddit.

What You Need To Know About Fake Video, Audio And The 2020 Election - Philip Ewing, NPR, September 2, 2019

Would you know this is a deepfake video of one of our own PC Librarians?

It took one of our librarians just minutes to create this video! Although it's not always easy to spot when media has been manipulated by AI, there are different things you can look for to help you spot a deepfake. Use these tips from PolitiFact to help you detect deepfake videos like a fact-checker:

  1. Listen for audio cues: Pay close attention to the audio in the video. Does it match up with the person's lip movements? If not, that could be a red flag that the video has been altered.
  2. Trust your eyes: Look into the eyes of the person in the video. Do they seem natural, or do they appear a bit off? In some cases, inconsistencies in eye movements can give away a deepfake.
  3. Watch for facial expressions: Keep an eye on facial expressions and movements. Deepfake videos may only animate certain parts of the face, so look for any unnatural or inconsistent facial features.
  4. Conduct lateral searches: Look beyond the video itself and search for information from multiple sources. Check for supporting evidence or reports from credible news sources to verify the authenticity of the video.
  5. Use reverse-image searches: Take screenshots of suspicious videos and use reverse-image search tools to trace their origins and see if they have been edited or manipulated.
  6. Think before you share: Finally, think twice before hitting that share button! Spreading deepfake videos, even if you know they're fake, can contribute to the spread of misinformation.
