ACE Star Model

Ace star Model image, showing how the steps from discovery (1) to summary (2) to translation (3) to integration (4) to evaluation (5), and finally back to discovery.

The Star Model  depicts various forms of knowledge in a relative sequence, as research evidence is moved through several cycles, combined with other knowledge and integrated into practice. The ACE Star Model provides a framework for systematically putting evidence-based practice processes into operation.

Notice that the evidence resources listed below are organized in relationship to the ACE Star Model.

Primary/Original Research Articles (DISCOVERY)

The DISCOVERY stage is when new knowledge is discovered through traditional research methodologies and scientific inquiry.

CINAHL Complete - A comprehensive resource for nursing and allied health literature. Includes research articles from over 1300 journals.

ScienceDirect - Contains over 800 journals in nursing and health professions.

PubMed (Medline) - Over 20 million citations to biomedical literature.

Systematic Reviews (EVIDENCE SUMMARY)

START HERE FIRST! The EVIDENCE SUMMARY stage allows you to more easily generalize by using systematic reviews.  If a systematic review has not been written on your research question, search for primary research articles (DISCOVERY).

In systematic reviews, studies with sound methodology are reviewed, assessed, and the results are summarized.  A meta-analysis reviews a number of valid studies and combines the results as if it were one large study.  These forms of evidence synthesize the research thereby reducing the complexity and volume of evidence.

CINAHL Complete- A comprehensive resource for nursing and allied health literature.  Use ADVANCED search to limit by Publication Type to Systematic Reviews.  You can also try selecting the Evidence Based Practice box.

PubMed (MEDLINE) - After typing your keywords in PubMed, use the filters on the left to limit to Systematic Reviews. You may also want to use the filter Meta-Analysis.

VA Evidence-Based Synthesis Program - Select systematic reviews.

Clinical Practice Guidelines (TRANSLATION)

The TRANSLATION stage translates evidence into practice recommendations that can be integrated into the clinical setting.

National Guideline Clearinghouse (NGC) - Over 3,000 evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.  NGC offers a "free weekly email subscription service that allows users to receive notification when new information is available."

US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) - Recommendations on preventive measures (screening tests, counseling, immunizations, & preventive medications) by topic.  USPSTF recommendations are included in the Healthy People 2020 national report.

Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario - Provides free downloads to just over 50 nursing best practice guidelines.

VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines - You can also sign up for an RSS feed to keep up with the latest guidelines.

CINAHL Complete - A comprehensive resource for nursing and allied health literature.  Use ADVANCED search to limit by publication type(s) including:

Care Plan
Clinical Innovations
Critical Path
Pratice Guidelines
Protocol
  or
Standards

Evidence-Based Care Sheets (CINAHL) - Browse by topic or keyword search.  The collection of care sheets are limited in CINAHL.

GuidelineCentral – Links to CPGs from reputable organizations.  Example: Pneumonia in adults: diagnosis and management

INTEGRATION and EVALUATION

The INTEGRATION stage is the step when changes in practice are made by individuals or organizations.  It is the implementation of the most current knowledge and innovations that are discovered during the research process.  Patient preferences also come into play at this stage.

AHRQ Health Care Innovations Exchange - "Profiles of successful and attempted innovations describe the innovative activity, its impact, how the innovator developed and implemented it, and other useful information for deciding whether to adopt the innovation" (AHRQ). Quality tools are also shared via this website.  Follow this site with an RSS feed or sign-up for email updates.

The EVALUATION stage occurs when outcomes are evalutated based on the changes made.  Outcomes include improved patient health and safety, provider and patient satisfaction, efficacy, efficiency, andeconomic analysis (Stevens, 2004).

National Quality Measures Clearinghouse - A database and website for information on specific evidence-based health care quality measures and measure sets.
