Information in the Field of Culture & Society

Culture and Society Icon

The Culture & Society FOI includes programs in the humanities, liberal arts, and languages.  These fields can vary widely, but generally information is gathered from historical, anthropological, and journalistic inquiry combined with critical thinking and interpretation. Information and knowledge may be factual, but often requires analysis and perspectives to understand the significance.  Some information in this FOI may be published in newspapers or other sources for general audiences, but original research is usually published first in academic journals specializing in certain fields or topics of study.  In most cases, it is best to find these original sources in order to understand the full scope, design, and conclusions of a study.  Within the realm of academic research, many different disciplines may provide different information and approaches for the same topic.

As a member of Culture & Society, you will learn where to find these types of sources, as well as how to evaluate and utilize the information for effective analysis and interpretation of social and cultural issues.
